www.out-grow.com
While I suppose CSR Science and Out Grow are "competitors" in the sense that we offer similar products to similar markets, but we have been working together. I am helping him redesign his website in exchange for mushroom cultures, and some hardwood pellets.
The guy who operates out-grow.com, Mike, is an amazing person. He has given me quite a few tips on various things when it comes to starting such a business, and is willing to help me out even more in various ways. I don't think detail here is necessary, and I don't want to distract that really I am just thankful for him/out-grow and the help they have offered me.
Check out his site and consider buying some stuff: Out-Grow.Com
I know they offer quality products, as I have heard from many people, and they have great service for how busy that whole operation is.
I hope I can offer that sort of quality, service, and friendliness when my business starts to *really* take off - Hopefully it will be comparable and I am trying my hardest to make it so - but it is very time consuming and I am totally just wingin' it without much formal or informal education on the subject.
Anyways.... Out-Grow.com = Awesome.
I'm sure I will have more to say about them later!

Edible Mushroom Cultures!
It looks like CSR Science will be getting a lot more edible mushroom cultures in, and hopefully will be able to offer them for pretty cheap.
We will also be able to offer them in a variety of ways, such as in liquid culture syringes, agar slants, and petri dishes. Hopefully they will all be sold for 10 to 12 dollars each. The culture tubes/agar slants are currently the easiest to make, so they might be cheaper than the others.
Agar slants are ideal for us because they seem to be much harder to accidentally contaminate, in addition to the cultures storing much better.
The syringes we will offer will be 10-12mls of liquid culture with a sterile 18 guage and 1.5 inch needle.
The petri dishes we will offer will either be an autoclavable 60x15mm size made of polypropylene or a 100mm by 15mm polystyrene petri dish.
The polypropylene is much more flexible and will make shipping easier and cheaper since it cannot crack like the polystyrene petri dishes can, though they are cheaper.
Also since it can be autoclaved - it reduces the vectors of contamination, because it will allow us to pressure cook and cool off the agar inside the dish.
Also! We are soon going to be offering a large variety of ALL American pressure cookers and ALL American Pressure Sterilizers that range from the very large 41 liters in size to the smaller 10 liters in size. We will also offer the accessories such as the stands and additional weights for replacement.
The goal is with in the next four months get over 100 products.

The Mail!
Today I got a fantastic 20 inch impulse sealer, 1000 13x20 spawn bags, and some information on how to go about selling sterilizers and pressure cookers. Good!
However my awesome method of shipping culture tubes might not be so awesome after all. Since culture tubes are glass and the mail system hates glass - I need to protect it. I was doing this using PVC pipe cotton, and duct tape. I would ship these 7" by 1" tubes - no problem.
Today they said it was to small to ship - but before it wasn't an issue or ever mentioned when I had shipped all of the other tubes. Either way, they shipped it but said this size and structure would often get lost. So to counter act that I'm going to put the tubes in an envelope now, but still in the pipe. It will cost a tiny bit more and be less likely to get lost. So there is one more kink that I've worked out before totally getting into the business.
I am also meeting all sorts of very helpful people out there - so far I've talked to www.headypoo.com and Out Grow. They have both given me suggestions and are interested in working together. That is a big bonus! Plus other places out there like mushroom palace, the laboratory, and fungiforum/mycopath are also helpful in answering any questions I have about getting business started, promoting websites, and more.
I should be able to offer colonized or uncolonized rye grain and sawdust blocks soon. The ones that will be colonized will be with Nameko, Elm Oyster, Shiitake, Pink Oyster and other edible mushrooms fairly soon - So be expecting some new products to hit the market in the next little while.
It might take longer - I want to make sure they fruit well (the strain, the mixtures, the bag size doesn't lead to issues, etc) because selling junky products is not something I aim to ever do. Plus I'll be able to get some spores from those mushrooms that can either be used to isolate a good looking rhizomorphic strain or they could just simply be donated to the free spore ring - or I could toss them in as freebies to my customers?

Not to Shabby!
While it has taken a lot longer than I thought it would to get started, I now have pulled in something around 50 dollars profit. That isn't much, especially since (and surprisingly!) I have spent 600+ dollars already.
I have sold water jet vacuum pumps (aka laboratory aspirators), elm oyster mushroom culture slants, Datura Stramonium var Tatula Seeds, and Nicotiana Rustica.
Anyways now I have about 1000 spawn mycobags coming in the mail, an 20" impulse sealer, 50lbs of rye grain, will soon have ~10+ mushroom cultures, have tons of surplus, and on and on.
I'll be able to make a lot of different products and probably make pretty good profit in the next month or so.. hopefully!
Except for it isn't really going to be profit, it will mostly pay off the investment, and than generate some more money to reinvest into the company. I'll probably buy a lot of aspirators, more containers, and maybe some laboratory glassware.
Its going to be pretty gradual for now - but this is only because I have to go to university and mess around with all that stupid homework. The moment summer hits buying, reselling, and manufacturing is going to go nuts! It will especially go nuts because I will not only have more time, but also because I will have already a web presence, and most of the kinks and set backs will be worked out.
One of the set backs was the cost of shipping tobacco and datura seeds. Its tricky - I wanted to say free shipping and pick up the assumed 44 cents for a stamp - but it costs about 1.22 to ship the seeds. So I had to up the price OR include shipping.
Either way the seeds are pretty cheap, and I am making small profit (a dollar or two?) on each sale.
The seed sales are pretty slow. I think its only slow because it is still winter. When spring and summer hit - I'll get way more sales. Hopefully.

24 Culture Slants Inoculated
I just finished inoculating 24 culture slants of malt extract agar with four different cultures, so that is six culture tubes of each of the following mushrooms; Nemko, Enoki, Elm Oyster, and Shiitake -75.
That is pretty good, it didn't take long but didn't go as smooth as I wanted it too - I am not used to inoculating that many culture tubes, however hopefully I get used to doing that many, and more.
Today I also came up with a fantastic way to ship these mushroom cultures for very cheap. Its possibly the best method available for CSR Science and its customers. I will probably ship these cultures for free, and perhaps adjust the price I was intending on selling them by a little bit. I think that would sell better.

Culture Tubes On The Way!
Just recently ordered 500 culture tubes with polypropylene caps for making master cultures and agar slants of our edible mushroom cultures for resale.
They culture tubes are about 18 mm x 150 mm in size! We will probably also sell these in small quantities, and probably also sell some good poured and sterile agar slants.
Hopefully everything comes together!
We already have shiitake, nemko, enoki, and elm oyster ready for sales - but we will hopefully get tons more of different edible and bioluminescent/glow in the dark mushroom cultures...
Maybe we can get 15 or 20 different cultures and sell the lot for 99 dollars or something?
I think that would be a good price, and pretty fair.
These should also be good for plant tissue culturing as well. Hopefully 500 tubes won't last us very long, and than we can start ordering 10,000 or more from the bigger suppliers for even better prices!
